When We Overload Ourselves

Opine, Social, Techie | Posted by LD February 23rd, 2010

I’ve spent the last few hours trying to figure out some things relating to my blog here and my accounts with facebook, myspace, twitter, all of that. fact is though, it seems everyone has pages upon pages of social networking sites. If you only needed one that be nice. But each site grants different things. And the bitch of it is that you really should try to link most of them together as you can. Hence why I’m having such a headache. I found stuff to help with all of it but it’s difficult for someone like me that’s completely dead to the world on some things.

But the real thing to think of that I’m getting to is this. Do we really need to spread what we post from here to every corner of the net? Does everyone need to know everything at every moment? Are we so in need of knowing that someone is listening that we have to continuously post place after place after place?

Just some questions for you to consider.

Social Networking, communication, and the way we share.

Opine, Social, Techie | Posted by LD December 13th, 2009

I’ve been hearing about social networks for the last few years. Things like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Digg. Now, the point of these sites originally was to give people a place they could post their interests, thoughts, and generally get in contact with those they share common cause. I’ve spent some time the last few days pondering the technical merits of Twitter while I sighed up, integrated it with dhampirdreams.com and general added folk to watch. This all started when I decided that I wanted to finally play around with the microblogging plasmoid in KDE 4.x. Thankfully all I had to do was enter the website address and my login information for Twitter. As you can see from the screenshot it just keep the current tweets and such plastered there. I’m hoping to find more people to follow over time. Read the rest of this entry »

Masochistic Editor?

Opine | Posted by ButterflyAngel October 28th, 2008

Hello everyone, I am going to be editing and cleaning up some of LD’s posts. I will be working on here as well as on withintheimperium. I hope to get started later today, and I’ll have more time on the weekends. We’ll see how it goes.

LD says: You’d have to be a masochist to take this job! :P

Blogging = Freedom

Opine, Social, Techie, Writing | Posted by LD October 21st, 2008

Apparently someone at Linux Journal took exception to a man saying it was time for the bloggers like myself who are’t professionals to give up and throw out everything related to our work. I guess with everything else out there it makes sense if your not dedicated to somethings.

The whole article is here. Here’s an excerpt for you.

I’ve been blogging since 1999. I’ve also been flickring, facebooking and tweeting for most of the time those services have been around. All are good for some things, but not everything, least of all for what blogging does best.

As personal journals on the Web go, blogs have no substitute. Twitter is fine for 140-character micro-postings, and for the ecosystem surrounding it. But micro-posts are not journals. Flickr is great for posting, tagging, organizing and annotating photographs, and for allied services such as creating groups and the rest of it, but it ain’t blogging. Facebook has some blogging features, but at the cost of forcing the blogger to operate in a vast hive of non-journalistic activity — and flat-out noise.

The Eb and Flow of Web Communities

Fan-Art, Opine, Writing | Posted by LD October 21st, 2008

Been thinking on how things have come up in the general ebbing of interest in the EFO and DS communities of late. Fact is that Eva is still an old series, and new blood coming in is really non-existent. I’m still writing on mine, but my output is so minuscule it doesn’t matter at times. Some good fics on FFN have come up lately, and I’m trying to get more going.

So Here’s a question. When something like this happens what’s the best course of action do you think? I’m not one for closing up shop, never gonna be one for that. Still it be nice to find a way to bring new life to the sites and communities. I can’t say that I’ve made friends in any of them, but then again I don’t care for a lot of people myself. Personality conflicts to the extreme. i still try to troll FFN every now and again to get some new blood for the sites but obviously it does’t always work.

So the question becomes how best to revitalize a community after 10 years where the attention span seems to be measured in seconds.

SCO, Microsoft, OOXML v ODF, and who knows what else!

Linux, Microsoft, Opine, Techie, Writing | Posted by LD August 31st, 2007

Hello folks. I know I’ve been negligent keeping the blog up to date but I’ve been busy. Finally got the writing bug back for some of my fanfics and got some new stuff posted on DS. Always a good spot to go for Fanfiction if I do say so myself. I’m trying to get back in the mood for Imperium as well, so expect SOME movement on that site here in the mid-range. I really probably should take some time to outline Imperium and hope that helps me move it a bit faster.

A lot of stuff has happened since I last posted. The big thing though is pretty good news for us linux nuts. SCO’s claims of Copywrite on the Unix and Unixware trademarks were summarily found to be property of Novell and the SCO was obligated to obey the Novell folk when it comes to ending their copywrite suit against IBM. SCO’s case has pretty much been eviscerated from this ruling. When the Nazgul are finished with them well… the executive board may beg the SEC to throw them in jail.

Vista has been a nightmare to deal with at work. Too many things are incompatable, too many people wanting to use five year old hardware with the new OS, and too many programs just out last year that are wholly incompatable. Just way too much going wrong here. Hell, DX10 and DX10.1 are really hurting me, since neither Nvidia or ATI have a stable DX10 driver for their DX10 compatable hardware.

MS added another headache when they said that the DX10 compatible hardware out now will be completely unusable and incompatible with DX10.1. And People wonder why I push Open Source, OpenGL, and OpenAL as the way to go.

MS also seems to be trying to buy standardization for OOXML. Way too many people being bribed into supporting this abomination of a standard. We already have a truly open and extensible ISO supported standard. There is no reason to fast track OOXML especially with all the many flaws built into it. Too many requirements that the OOXML format support bugs from older binary versions of Office. Just drop that first off and actually change the standard to fix those problems.

That’s my opinion though. I’m no expert.

Fanfic wise I posted two new fics. Exile which can be found here, and the first chapter of a short comedy fic called Neko-Waffers, which can be found here.

Most if not all of my older fics are slated for MAJOR revisions before their next chapters come out. I’ll be working on those chapters over time, but they will all be revised before I post their next chapters. FFN also has my current work.
