Mark Shuttleworth: You Can’t Make Money Off the Linux Desktop

Linux | Posted by LD October 28th, 2008

Seems that Mark Shuttleworth is stirring the pot again. According to this blog from Computer World Shuttleworth has declared that the idea you make money from the Linux Desktop is in error. The shrink wrapping of free programs and sending them is not the way to make money, but the way to get people on. You make your money, according to him, by the value added services you provide. Things like support and other resources. But the desktop itself not at all.

He’s also quoted as saying Microsoft has made the leap with their offerings in the Cloud Computing area.

I figured I’d share this with you all.

Blogging = Freedom

Opine, Social, Techie, Writing | Posted by LD October 21st, 2008

Apparently someone at Linux Journal took exception to a man saying it was time for the bloggers like myself who are’t professionals to give up and throw out everything related to our work. I guess with everything else out there it makes sense if your not dedicated to somethings.

The whole article is here. Here’s an excerpt for you.

I’ve been blogging since 1999. I’ve also been flickring, facebooking and tweeting for most of the time those services have been around. All are good for some things, but not everything, least of all for what blogging does best.

As personal journals on the Web go, blogs have no substitute. Twitter is fine for 140-character micro-postings, and for the ecosystem surrounding it. But micro-posts are not journals. Flickr is great for posting, tagging, organizing and annotating photographs, and for allied services such as creating groups and the rest of it, but it ain’t blogging. Facebook has some blogging features, but at the cost of forcing the blogger to operate in a vast hive of non-journalistic activity — and flat-out noise.

last.fm goodies

Techie | Posted by LD October 19th, 2008

Been trying to figure out how to use some of the last FM Goodies. Might have to find a better skin for wordpress in order to do so but I want to have some of them as an option, preferable replacing at least the simple RSS feed on the side bar. for now enjoy the library link on the side bar and tell me if it’s worth keeping. I know there are a few other types of players I can use there as well. I’ll be testing them, see if I like any.

Distributed Computing

Opine, Techie | Posted by LD April 27th, 2008

Long time to see,

Decided to reinstall the seti@home project on my home system. Fact is that this was the first project in what became to be known as Distributed computing. THe idea is that by sharing the load with many computers at regular peoples homes they can do more and get more done then just with their super computers alone. And they are right. Since SETI@Home started, Berkley took their original idea and created a frame work any other project could take advantage of. Boinc is a frame work that allows many projects to utilize the dead cycles of your proc when you aren’t doing anything except say… posting to your blog. Writing a fanfiction or novel.

Wasting power while you are at work.

SETI@Home can be found here. BOINC can be found here.

There are many projects using this software, so if you aren’t as interested in Aliens you can find one for your interests rather easily.
